Object Perspective/Gestalt/

Wow, lots of stuff to think about right.

Ok lets review this:

Elements and Principles: These are always in art - and can really help bring things around to make a piece of work successful. It is such a good way to talk about your art - when you use these elements and principles!

Elements: Line, color, texture, shape, form, value, size

Principles: Balance, harmony, contrast, repetition, dominance and unity.

We tested out visual memory in class - it was kinda difficult - Robert Henri used this method in his teaching...hmm.  He had his students observe the model or object in one room and then they went into another room to draw or paint it.  His idea was to develop a visual memory as well as learn to develop your vision.  What do you think?

Gestalt

I talked about the concept of Gestalt.  Gestalt - is a theory of understanding the whole of something by observing the parts - and in doing this a we see its shape or form of the parts that make the whole.  From this - we glean meaningful perceptions from this.

This was very popular (and sometimes still is)  in art and therapy!  Artist Jackson Pollock did Gestalt therapy when he did his popular "splatter painting".

In my lecture of Gestalt I spoke about how Gestalt is used in perception by organizing components into a meaningful whole. In doing this sometimes the parts are very different then the whole of the object.  In organizing, there are 4 different laws:

1. law of closure: when objects are grouped together they are seen as a whole.
    Why this is important:  It is important to give spacing in your work.

2. law of proximity: Objects near to each other tend to be grouped together.
    Why is this important: It is good to give space between objects and to understand the eyes will      group objects together.

3. Law of Continuity: Lines are seen as following the smoothest path
    Why:  if you have objects you are drawing there will be a line that it it automatically forms.

4.  Law of similarity: When objects look similar to each other people often perceive them as a group.

Homework: Perspective

Homework this weekend is to do perspective drawings: 1 Point and a 2 Point.

Do either an object - or a location in your home/environment.

Drawing Lecture: Perspective

Highlights:

1-Point Perspective has one vanishing point on linear perspective - on the the horizontal line.

2 Point Perspective:  has 2 vanishing points

The cool thing with perspective is to use it in your drawings of even objects as so:

this is drawn with the objective of a 2-pt perspective!

3 Point Perspective Birds eye view and Worms (or Ant's eye view)

Interesting Street Artist

French Artist ‘Levalet’ Injects Humor into the Streets of Paris with New Site-Specific Street Artby Johnny Strategy on February 9, 2015

A bronze bull head fountain is suddenly transformed into a minotaur. A decrepit corner of an alley becomes a holding pen for ostriches. If any of these odd happenings sound familiar to you, you’re probably living in Paris and have just witnessed the work of French artist Charles Leval (previously). Going by the name Levalet, the artist injects humor into the streets of Paris by gluing animal and human-shaped pasteups onto walls. A lot of thought goes into location too as each piece usually interacts with its environment in one way or another.

Levalet has been updating his site and facebook page with new work he’s created so far in 2015. When not on the streets, Levalet can be found in a classroom (he teaches art) and in a gallery (he held an exhibition late last year at Galerie Geraldine Zberro). “I was looking for places and contexts to operate,” says Levalet, referring to his prime medium: the wall. “The street became a creative space I had to invade.” (via StreetArtNews)

Homework Week 4

Good work today y'all.  It was tough I know.  It takes a discipline and patience to work out drawing.  (It is truly hard work to be an artist) ..... But you did it!!  I promise it is easy after that! ....

Regarding homework...There were many that did not bring their books in to show the work.  Please next class - and it may help for you to catch up if you can.  The ones I saw...excellent!!

So for homework...


Make 2 drawings: one with pen (fine) and one with fine pencil.

Draw your favorite shoe or boot.  Consider the shadows, lines, cross-contours.
